lyrics

The Thief

I took the early train to get out of this town
On the platform was a drunk, a priest, a stranger
the seat upon my left was empty warm and clean
I laid back my head to watch the town receding
Tenement clustered sky
A thief leaves in the night

I realise now that I left you with some scars
But the hurt are always loved and most well tended
But with the picture of your pain etched in my head
I felt just like a soldier freshly sentenced
Court-martialled and tried.
A man set up to die.

I do believe I said some words that were not true
But I don't think that I lied when first I said them
And now I call to you across the great divide
But your angry answer falls into the canyon
You know that I don't cry
With these deserts in my eyes

I've tried so hard to close the chapter in this book
But the silver ribbon shines and sometimes wavers
When I'm tired and weak then I'll take a look
You know I'm not the one to ask for favours
I hope that you don't mind
At heart I'm still a child

I took the early train to get out of this town
On the platform was a drunk, a priest, a stranger
the seat upon my right was empty warm and clean
I laid back my head to watch the town receding
Tenement clustered sky
A thief leaves in the night
